what we’re looking for

  • solo projects, 2-5 piece bands and bands with drums will be considered

  • must be willing to write a prompt-guided song

  • must be able to reliably commute to north minneapolis

  • all sounds will be considered!

the fine print

-studio is located in an attic and is only accessible by a pull-down staircase/ladder. reasonable accommodations may be made on a case-by-case basis.

-this is a d.i.y. home studio and is by no means a state-of-the-art facility. we’ll do everything we can to accommodate your sound and bring your vision to life. all we ask is a bit of open-mindedness and graciousness!

-no payment or fees required to participate. this project is entirely pro-bono.

-submission portal will remain open until 12/8, with final selections made on or by 12/15. exceptions or changes may apply.

-final project will be distributed as a various artists album by the mess records and will be available on all streaming platforms.

-the total of tracks will vary depending on quantity of artist submissions, we are hoping for a 5 to 8 track record.

-financial disbursement will be handled by track, rather than by the full project. once associated costs for recording and labor have been met, artist will retain 100% of the revenue from their track.

-artists must sign an artist recording agreement.

-artists will retain 100% of their copyright and masters to their song.

scheduling portal will be open to book 3hr recording blocks, each track will be allotted 2-4 3hr sessions at the mess (this includes a mixing session).

recording and mixing sessions

musicians will get together, make introductions, discuss the project in-depth, share questions, comments, and concerns and discuss their songwriting process thus far

first all-hands meeting

april 6th

final mixes have been reviewed, approved and sent off to local audio engineers for mastering.

musicians get together, talk about their mess tape experience, discuss promo cycle and solidify release timeline
