a record written, composed, performed and recorded by twin cities musicians
a record showcasing the strength of our community, the strength of our passion
a record for our chaos, our community and our creativity to call home
what we’re looking for
solo projects, 3-4 piece bands and bands with drums will be considered
must be willing to write a prompt-guided song
must be able to reliably commute to minneapolis
all sounds will be considered!
we are also looking for audio engineers to assist with production and mastering!
the fine print
-studio is located in an attic and is only accessible by a pull-down staircase/ladder. reasonable accommodations may be made on a case-by-case basis.
-no payment or fees required to participate. this project is entirely pro-bono.
-submission portal will remain open until the 12/29, with final selections made on 1/19. exceptions may apply.
-final project will be distributed as a various artists album by the mess records and will be available on all streaming platforms.
-total of tracks will vary depending on quantity of artist submissions, we are hoping for a 5 to 8 track record.
-financial disbursement will be handled by track, rather than by the full project. once associated costs for recording and labor have been met, artist will retain 100% of the revenue from their track.
-artists must sign an artist recording agreement.
-artists will retain 100% of their copyright and masters to their song.

november 3-december 29

december 29-january 19
applications close, submitted musicians will be compiled and processed. 5-8 musicians/bands will be selected, notified and provided with the tape prompt
selection
preparation and writing
january 19-march 2
time to write, compose and finalize song that will be recorded for the mess tape.
p.s. recording can begin as soon as song is finalized!
first all-hands meeting
february 21
musicians will get together, make introductions, discuss the project in-depth, share questions/comments/concerns and discuss their songwriting process thus far
january ?- april 13th
scheduling portal will be open to book 3hr recording blocks, each track will be allotted 3-4 3hr sessions at the mess.
recording and mixing sessions

april 27
final mixes have been reviewed, approved and sent off to local audio engineers for mastering.
may 17th
musicians get together, talk about their mess tape experience, discuss promo cycle and solidify release timeline
